Longitudinal Data Analysis : Designs, Models and Methods

Description

By looking at the processes of change over time - by carrying out longitudinal studies - researchers answer questions about learning, development, educational growth, social change and medical outcomes. However, longitudinal research has many faces. This book examines all the main approaches as well as newer developments (such as structural equation modelling, multilevel modelling and optimal scaling) to enable the reader to gain a thorough understanding of the approach and make appropriate decisions about which technique can be applied to the research problem. Conceptual explanations are used to keep technical terms to a minimum; examples are provided for each approach; issues of design, measurement and significance are considered; and a standard notation is used throughout.

Reason to Believe: A Response to Common Objections to Christianity

Description

Do Christians Have Good Answers for the Really Tough Questions? Dr. R. C. Sproul believes they do. In this unique book, he deals with the most common objections to the truths of the Christian faith, including: * Has science disproved the existence of God? * Will non-Christians who never hear of Christ go to hell? * Is it narrow-minded and bigoted to believe Christ is only one way to God? * Why do people need God when life is going smoothly? * Isn't Christianity just a crutch for people who can't handle life's pressures? * Is heaven real or just "pie in the sky"? * Do Christians have a good answer to evil and suffering? * How does the church explain all its hypocrites? Reason to Believe is no collection of pat answers and proof texts. It addresses each objection in a separate chapter, which includes a special capsule summary that gives the kernel of each argument. This is a superb resource for those in visitation and calling programs, and a must for anyone who wants to do more than scratch the surface of Christian truths.

T&T Clark Handbook of the Old Testament: An Introduction to the Literature, Religion and History of the Old Testament

Description

This title provides a comprehensive and profound introduction to the literature and history of the Old Testament. Beginning with methods and sources, this Handbook looks at the Biblical text, archaeology, other texts, and iconography. It explores varying exegetical methods, including historical criticism, canonical approach, feminist, social scientific and liberation theology. Methods in archaeology, Hebrew epigraphic and iconography are also covered. The second section is devoted to the history and religious history of Ancient Israel. Introductory matters, such as fundamental terminology and definitions, ethnic identity, ancestors and the dead, geography and time reckoning are explicated before the book moves on to a historical survey from the Iron Age (c. 1200 BCE) to the early Roman period (ending about 63 CE). The heart of the book is a detailed survey of the Hebrew canonical books, section by section and book by book. The discussion for each book includes: biblical presentation and content; problems arising from the history of literary analysis and research; the origin and growth of the writing; the theology; and notes on reception history. This book will provide students with everything they need to study the Hebrew Bible/Old Testament.

Rembrandt

Description

Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-69), the son of a well-to-do miller from the university town of Leiden, was by the age of 26 Holland's most celebrated painter and has remained an artist of universal appeal. Rembrandt made his name in Amsterdam, capital of the newly independent Dutch Republic and, as the centre of a global trade empire, a magnet for merchants, writers and artists. No one understood its possibilities better than Rembrandt, or captured its personalities and landscapes more memorably. Whether tracing the highs and lows of Rembrandt's career or explaining the unique qualities of his work, Mariet Westermann's book is always lucid and perceptive. Based on the latest Rembrandt research, it demonstrates splendidly how a contextual study can stimulate the reader's delight in the art itself.

An elderly stroke victim dies without having arranged a will...Beautiful young Elinor Carlisle stood serenely in the dock, accused of the murder of Mary Gerrard, her rival in love. The evidence was damning: only Elinor had the motive, the opportunity and the means to administer the fatal poison. Yet, inside the hostile courtroom, only one man still presumed Elinor was innocent until proven guilty: Hercule Poirot was all that stood between Elinor and the gallows... A young man returns to Nigeria after fifteen years Rembrandt download ebook pdf in New York. The country of his childhood has changed: it has found fast-food restaurants, email cafes, contempt for authority and the all - consuming draw of 'money for nothing'. From the consulate back in Manhattan to the dusty streets of Lagos, life runs like clockwork - as long as you can pay the fee: a bribe for the visa clerk; a 'Christmas gift' at immigration. Petrol pumps overcharge and internet cafes overflow with scammers. Every Day is for the Thief is a candid tale of political and spiritual corruption, and a moving account of what it means to go home.

Elizabeth Gilbert: COMMITTED

COMMITTED

Description

At the end of her bestselling memoir Eat, Pray, Love , Elizabeth Gilbert fell in love with Felipe, a Brazilian-born man of Australian citizenship who'd been living in Indonesia when they met. Resettling in America, the couple swore eternal fidelity to each other, but also swore to never, ever, under any circumstances get legally married. (Both were survivors of previous bad divorces. Enough said.) But providence intervened one day in the form of the United States government, which-after unexpectedly detaining Felipe at an American border crossing-gave the couple a choice: they could either get married, or Felipe would never be allowed to enter the country again. Having been effectively sentenced to wed, Gilbert tackled her fears of marriage by delving into this topic completely, trying with all her might to discover through historical research, interviews, and much personal reflection what this stubbornly enduring old institution actually is. Told with Gilbert's trademark wit, intelligence and compassion, Committed attempts to "turn on all the lights" when it comes to matrimony, frankly examining questions of compatibility, infatuation, fidelity, family tradition, social expectations, divorce risks and humbling responsibilities. Gilbert's memoir is ultimately a clear-eyed celebration of love with all the complexity and consequence that real love, in the real world, actually entails.

KATE SHUGAK is a native Aleut working as a private investigator in Alaska. She's 5 foot 1 inch tall, carries a scar that runs from ear to ear across her throat and owns a half-wolf, half-husky dog named Mutt. Resourceful, strong-willed, defiant, Kate is tougher than your average heroine - and she needs to be to survive the worst the Alaskan wilds can throw at her. A TAINT IN THE BLOOD: A daughter hires Kate to clear her mother's name. Twenty years ago, her mother was convicted of arson and murder, of setting fire to the family home while her two sons were inside. One died, and one was maimed. Her daughter has always believed in her innocence. But now her mother is terminally ill, and time is running out...

Help arrives in the form of a grieving gay neighbor, a visiting monarch, and the dashing young lieutenant who defects from her yacht. They will surprise and maybe even shock you, but, I promise, they will make you laugh." Do you ever feel like you want more from your life--but get scared or overwhelmed by the idea of making changes? For many, worry, fear, or negativity are stumbling blocks that can be extraordinarily difficult to overcome. Sandra Byrd: The One Year Be-Tween You and God: Devotions for Girls

The One Year Be-Tween You and God: Devotions for Girls

Description

This One Year book is a diary-style devotional for tween girls (9 to 14) that emphasizes their growing, special relationship with God. Each devotion begins with a statement, thought, or question to God. Every girl is likely to make these statements and ask such questions . . . many of which they may not want to share with other people. The book emphasizes that tween girls can have a relationship with God and that they can share their intimate thoughts, fears, insecurities, joys, etc. It lets girls know: it's between you and God. Questions/topics include the following: "I know I'm supposed to be close to you (God), but I don't really feel like it now. How can I change that?" "Everyone talks about how I'm supposed to have faith, which is fine, except I don't really understand what faith actually is." Each devotion gives biblically based insight into the subject.

[FREE] Pillow Book of Sei Shonagon: The Diary of a 10th Century Courtesan in Heian Japan download pdf

Arthur Waley,Dennis C. Washburn: Pillow Book of Sei Shonagon: The Diary of a 10th Century Courtesan in Heian Japan

Pillow Book of Sei Shonagon: The Diary of a 10th Century Courtesan in Heian Japan

Description

Japan in the 10th century stood physically and culturally isolated from the rest of the world. Inside this bubble, a subtle and beautiful world was in operation, and its inhabitants were tied to the moment, having no interest in the future and disdain for the past. The Pillow Book of Sei Shonagon was a product of a tenth century courtier's experiences in the palace of Empress Teishi. A common custom of the time period, courtiers used to keep notes or a diary in a wooden pillow with a drawer. This "pillow book" reflects the confident aesthetic judgments of Shonagon and her ability to create prose that crossed into the realm of the poetic. The Pillow Book of Sei Shonagon is one of the earliest examples of diary literature whose passages chronicle the events of the court calendar, the ceremonies and celebrations specific to Teishi's court, and the vignettes that provide brilliantly drawn glimpses into the manners and foibles of the aristocracy. A contemporary of Murasaki Shikibu, the author of The Tale of Genji, this small diary brings an added dimension to Murasaki's timeless and seminal work. Arthur Waley's elegant translation of The Pillow Book of Sei Shonagon captures the beauty of its prose and the vitality of Shonagon's narrative voice, as well as her quirky personality traits. In a place and time where poetry was as important as knowledge and beauty was highly revered, Sei Shonagon's private writings give the reader a charming and intimate glimpse into a time of isolated innocence and pale beauty.

In his 14th book, bestselling author Nicholas Sparks tells the unforgettable story of a man whose Pillow Book of Sei Shonagon: The Diary of a 10th Century Courtesan in Heian Japan free epub brushes with death lead him to the love of his life. While many historians have looked at violence in connection with particular religious manifestations (jihad in Islam or Christianity s Crusades), Armstrong looks at each faith not only Christianity and Islam, but also Buddhism, Hinduism, Confucianism, Daoism, and Judaism in its totality over time. As she describes, each arose in an agrarian society with plenty powerful landowners brutalizing peasants while also warring among themselves over land, then the only real source of wealth. In this world, religion was not the discrete and personal matter it would become for us but rather something that permeated all aspects of society. And so it was that agrarian aggression, and the warrior ethos it begot, became bound up with observances of the sacred.

[FREE] Sovereignty: Organized Hypocrisy pdf

Stephen D. Krasner: Sovereignty: Organized Hypocrisy

Sovereignty: Organized Hypocrisy

Description

The acceptance of human rights and minority rights, the increasing role of international financial institutions, and globalization have led many observers to question the continued viability of the sovereign state. Here a leading expert challenges this conclusion. Stephen Krasner contends that states have never been as sovereign as some have supposed. Throughout history, rulers have been motivated by a desire to stay in power, not by some abstract adherence to international principles. Organized hypocrisy--the presence of longstanding norms that are frequently violated--has been an enduring attribute of international relations Political leaders have usually but not always honored international legal sovereignty, the principle that international recognition should be accorded only to juridically independent sovereign states, while treating Westphalian sovereignty, the principle that states have the right to exclude external authority from their own territory, in a much more provisional way. In some instances violations of the principles of sovereignty have been coercive, as in the imposition of minority rights on newly created states after the First World War or the successor states of Yugoslavia after 1990; at other times cooperative, as in the European Human Rights regime or conditionality agreements with the International Monetary Fund. The author looks at various issues areas to make his argument: minority rights, human rights, sovereign lending, and state creation in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Differences in national power and interests, he concludes, not international norms, continue to be the most powerful explanation for the behavior of states.

The study of animal cognition raises profound questions about the minds of animals and philosophy of mind itself. Sovereignty: Organized Hypocrisy download book Aristotle argued that humans are the only animal to laugh, but in recent experiments rats have also been shown to laugh. In other experiments, dogs have been shown to respond appropriately to over two hundred words in human language. In this introduction to the philosophy of animal minds Kristin Andrews introduces and assesses the essential topics, problems and debates as they cut across animal cognition and philosophy of mind. She addresses the following key topics: * what is cognition, and what is it to have a mind? What questions should we ask to determine whether behaviour has a cognitive basis? * the science of animal minds explained: ethology, behaviourist psychology, and cognitive ethology * rationality in animals * animal consciousness: what does research into pain and the emotions reveal? What can empirical evidence about animal behaviour tell us about philosophical theories of consciousness? * does animal cognition involve belief and concepts; do animals have a 'Language of Thought'?
